A PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAM ON AUTISM

Staff Reporter –

Psynapse Clinic, a mental health and wellness clinic, is organising a public awareness program on autism this evening at The Conclave Kolkata to observe World Autism Awareness Day. Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behaviour. The World Health Organization estimates about 1 in 100 children had autism during the period from 2012 to 2021 with a trend of increasing prevalence over time. However, the study’s 1% figure may reflect an underestimate of prevalence in low- and middle-income countries. Considering the importance of the disorder, this program is a timely one. The program was attended by eminent doctors Dr. Indranil Saha, Dr. Lokesh Pande, Dr. Satyam Chakraborty, Dr Atanu Dogra as well as the three senior Psychiatry consultants Dr. Altaf Hossien, Dr. Subrata Naskar and Dr. Souvik Chakraborty whose brainchild is the new clinic.
Ms. Mohini Ojha, Occupational Therapist was also present to discuss the options of therapies that can help these children.
Some parents shared their experiences in the journey with their special ones.
