This evidence-based guidebook marks a pivotal moment in Indian patient care, providing clinicians with crucial, step-by-step insights into the strategic use of micronutrients to optimize recovery from a wide spectrum of acute and chronic illnesses, and surgical interventions.

Developed and reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel of leading medical experts, these guidelines aim to standardize and elevate recovery protocols across the nation. They highlight how micronutrients, especially B-complex vitamins among others, play a pivotal role in accelerating recovery across a multitude of health challenges by supporting key recovery mechanisms, including the resolution of inflammation, efficient tissue repair, robust immune system modulation, and effective management of oxidative stress. Applicable from acute illnesses like flu, diarrhea, malaria, and dengue, through chronic conditions, surgical care, and even pediatric health, the guidelines offer doctors a structured approach to facilitating recovery across all stages, from illness onset to complete convalescence.

In underserved communities across West Bengal, particularly in the northern districts, a high incidence of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and scrub typhus persists due to environmental factors and other challenges, the need for standardized, practical recovery protocols becomes especially critical for improving patient outcomes at scale.

Milind Thatte, Managing Director, Procter & Gamble Health Limited said, “At P&G Health, we are committed to advancing patient-centered healthcare. For this, we continue to partner with the medical community to bring evidence-based solutions that support better health outcomes and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients. We understand that while there is growing awareness on the role of micronutrients in recovery following illnesses, infections and surgeries, there is limited information on how these can be effectively used especially for Indian patients.

Recognizing this unmet need for a comprehensive, evidence-based guidance on optimizing recovery by leveraging micronutrients, P&G Health in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association, is delighted to launch ‘India’s First Patient Recovery Guidelines’ for doctors. The recovery guidelines will empower clinicians with a practical tool that can significantly improve patient outcomes, helping individuals return to their full health and vitality faster.”.

The guidelines also outline the clinical relevance of micronutrient support across a wide range of patient scenarios. In acute illnesses such as infections and gastrointestinal conditions, micronutrients help strengthen immune response and restore metabolic balance. In chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and liver disorders, targeted micronutrient support may help improve metabolic pathways and support long-term resilience. While primary medications are essential for treating illnesses, optimal recovery often hinges on the body’s ability to repair, restore balance, and rebuild. The new guidelines shed light on the often-underestimated power of micronutrients – the essential vitamins and minerals our bodies need in small quantities, but which play colossal roles in healing.

Dr. Amarnath Pandit, President, & Dr Parthapratim Pal, Secretory, Indian Medical Association (IMA), West Bengal Chapter said, “In West Bengal, clinicians frequently manage a diverse disease burden, particularly in the northern districts where vector-borne diseases such as malaria, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, and scrub typhus remain prevalent. Among tribal populations, studies indicate a high prevalence of infectious diseases (54%), gastrointestinal problems (37.8%), and injuries and pain-related conditions, reflecting the complexity of healthcare needs and recovery pathways. In such settings, recovery is often prolonged and requires a more comprehensive approach to care.
The introduction of these evidence-based guidelines provides clinicians with a structured and practical framework to support recovery across patient groups. By emphasizing the role of micronutrients, including B-complex vitamins, in key physiological processes such as energy metabolism, immune response, and tissue repair, the guidelines enable a more holistic approach to patient care. Integrating these principles into routine practice can help improve recovery outcomes and support faster return to health across diverse populations.”

The complete guidelines are now accessible for clinicians on the IMA website at: Indian Medical Association

Staff Reporter – P&G Health (maker of brands like Polybion, Neurobion, Livogen etc.) in a landmark collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA), recently announced the launch of India’s First Patient Recovery Guidelines for Doctors: “Clinical Application of Micronutrients in Recovery” at an event held in Howrah.
